Module 6 Artwork Analysis
The Face of War
Artist: Salvador Dali's
Year: 1940
The face of war shows the horror and terror people suffer during the
Spanish Civil War and almost the beginning of the Second World War. The Spanish Civil War
affected the Spaniards severely due to their goal to become a Republic, which
was crushed and left Spain turning into a repressive fascist dictatorship. The
first sense you get a looking at this painting is loneliness, death, and can feel
the sadness. The snakes surrounding the face shows that attack on innocent
people keep going even after going through a lot. The technique used in the
creation of this painting was surrealism. The artist Salvador Dali drew a lot
of his inspiration from wars for people to be able to learn and grow from their
past. The face of war painting shows the loss, suffering, and misery that was
caused by war. The materials used to create this painting were oil and canvas.
The materials show accuracy in his work and show the contrast in color between
the face and the desert. The brownish colors he used suggest a sense of fear
and sadness. Out in the desert alone and far away from anything known or
comforting. The skulls in the mouth and eyes representing death. The painting
also makes you feel sad and frightened when looking into its deeper meaning. Dalí
insisted that the handprint on the bottom-right corner of the piece was his
own. It is the only work that Dalí imprinted a part of himself, but we will
never know if it was accidental or a symbolic gesture by the artist. This
painting shows a lot of fear and pain to help people remember how important
peace is.

Just by looking at the artwork I can tell how negativley the war impacted the people. Good job giving the audiance background information. This helped me understand your analyses of the art. I like how you broke every part of the painting and described how it made you feel. If you were creating this art piece, would you leave it how it is or change something.
ReplyDeleteThe first impressions of this piece is that it is a very deep and dark piece that has a lot of meaning behind it. I totally agree with you about the first feelings you get is loneliness, death, and sadness. I think you did a great job on analyzing the piece and talking about the symbolism. What do you think that the skulls inside the skulls represent?
ReplyDeleteI love odd paintings and drawings whether it's to show awareness of the war or the affects of it they always faste me. However the meaning behind the painting I can see and agree with is that there is sadness and loneliness from the painting.
ReplyDeleteI thought your description of this piece was really good. I loved how you said what it was made of and how it was made. Knowing that added an extra layer of depth when looking at the piece. I liked that you put the history of the piece in as well like when and why it was made. I thought you did a great job.
